Week 2: Un-assigned note

Image
Everything, Everything  by Nicola Yoon  Pages: 1-306  After reading a little bit about Nicola Yoon, I discovered that she is Jamaican and married to an Asian man. In the book Everything, Everything Maddy is supposed to be multicultured with her mother being Asian and her deceased father was African American.  Lately, I've been reading another book by Yoon called   The Sun is Also a Star  where the two main characters are actually Asian and Jaimacan. I think Yoon likes to include aspects of her life in the novels. I like how she made the books a little more personal and included multiracial relationships. Based on the pictures I have seen from Everything, Everything it appears that the Maddys race is changed. This may be because it was hard to cast an Asian- African American actress but I find that also interesting. The movie casted an African American woman to play her mother as well. The character of Olly was always w...

Week 2: Theme

Image
Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon Pages: 1-306 Theme: Forbidden Love Many romance novels are very similar with different interesting elements. Everything, Everything has the classic Romeo and Juliet theme of forbidden love but includes new elements. There were many symbols and aspects to support this theme. One symbol incorporated in the novel is Maddys “illness”.  Another symbol is the window communication between Maddy and Olly. They go through so much over the course of the novel and fight so hard to be together. The novel stands out due to Maddy's illness; although Maddy's true illness was her mother. Maddy's mother tries to keep Olly and Maddy apart by blaming the illness. Her mother was really just trying to protect her. Maddy's father and brother died in a car accident when Maddy was young and Maddy's mother never recovered. Maddy was sick as an infant and her mothers PTSD caused her to believe that Maddy had SCID.  Luckily, Everything, Ever...

Week 2: Quick Burst

Image
Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon Pages: 1-306 This video is about the science behind love. Everything, Everything is a love story so I thought it would be appropriate to explain the reasoning behind it. Much of the novel included science i.e. Maddys illness.

Week 2: Quote

Image
Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon Pages: 1-306 "A universe that can wink into existence can wink out again" (pg 280) This quote is written after Maddy realizes that her mother has been lying to her her entire life. Maddy was raised to believe that she had the rare condition called SCID. The condition basically means that Maddy was allergic to everything. SHe was unable to leave her house and lived a very isolated, lonely life. She spends most of her time with her mother or her nurse. After Maddy runs away to Hawaii to be with Olly, she gets sick. Her mother took her back home and used it as proof of why Maddy needed to listen to her. Months after, Maddy gets an email from the doctor that treated her in Hawaii saying how she never had SCID. After further investigation, Maddy finds out that she was never sick. Her mother suffers from PTSD after the death of Maddy's father and brother when Maddy was an infant. Maddy was kept indoors for 18 years and never abl...

Im a hopeless romantic and basically find any love story appealing.  I usually can get hooked on a book pretty quickly when a love story is introduced. Basically, all of my favorite books were romance novels. When I read, I often find myself enveloped in the characters. The book becomes real life for me. I am very excited to keep reading more romance novels over the next semester. Essential Questions: Are  romance novels realistic? Is every romance novel the same? What do authors bring to ...
