Week 8: Analytical
The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider
198- 352
Most stories have both static and dynamic characters that add to the storyline. The Beginning of Everything has a mix of both. The three main characters in the novel are Ezra Faulkner, Toby Ellicott, and Cassidy Thorpe. All three of them are different in their own ways. Robyn Schneider uses characterization to explain the characters. Ezra is the main character and he is definitely dynamic. Toby is Ezra's best friend and he is pretty static. Cassidy is Ezra's love interest of the novel and she is dynamic like Ezra. All three characters add to the novel making it far more interesting.
Ezra Faulker's life took a huge turn after an accident that left him disabled. Ezra was at the top of the food chain: he was student body president, captain of the tennis team, prom king and dating the most popular girl in school. After the car accident, Ezra had to basically restart his life. He lost all of his friends and realized who was his true friends. He started hanging out with his childhood best friend, Toby, and the new girl, Cassidy. Ezra joined the debate team and fell in love with Cassidy. By the end of the novel, Ezra learned how popularity was not all that mattered and accepted himself and his new life.

Toby Ellicott suffered a traumatic tragedy on his twelfth birthday when he watched a child get decapitated on a Disneyland ride. That experience may have changed his and Ezra's friendship but Tody, himself did not change very much. Toby remained the loyal and dependable person he always was. Toby accepts Ezra when Ezra's other friends abandon him. Toby does not change throughout the novel but continues being genuine and kind.
Cassidy Thorpe was the new girl filled with mystery. Ezra mentioned how she spoke about the wild adventures she endured throughout her life. At the beginning of the novel, Cassidy seems to be a happy person but as the story progresses the reader finds that she has darkness inside her. The reader is made aware that Cassidy's brother died the previous year. Cassidy breaks up with Ezra without reason but eventually explains how she believes that her brother died in the car accident that crippled Ezra. Cassidy is perhaps the most complex character in the novel due to her secrets and sadness. She ends up alone by the end of the book and her future is uncertain.
