"'The internet is a dangerous place. It can make or break you. '" (Morgan 237)
This quote is said by a kid named Philip. The story takes place in the future and Philip is hoping to be selected to travel to Mars. In the story, kids are being sent to Mars to live there and start a new civilization. Philip is hoping to escape his problems on earth. A video online basically ruined his life and he is looking for a fresh start. The video showed him nervously asking a girl to prom and her saying no. He then proceeded to throw up in a trash can nearby due to nerves. The video was all over social media and he became the laughing stock of the internet.
This quote is very prominent in today's society. The internet is a dangerous place. A common trend on the internet right now is "canceling" people. It happens when a celebrity maybe says or does something that some people disagree with and people say they are "canceled" or that their careers are over. One example of this is about a 16-year-old girl named Rowan Blanchard. Rowan is a strong most active of equality and acceptance but is receiving a lot of backlashes right now. Rowan liked a few posts about people joking about bisexual people. The posts were just jokes yet many people are calling her a biphobe. People are sending her treats and a lot of hate over her simply liking someone else's post. Rowan sent out a statement where she apologized for her actions even mentioning how she is bisexual herself. The statement should have been the end of the debate but she is still receiving hate from the situation. The post has over three thousand comments and a good majority of them are hate comments. It is sad to see so many people spreading negativity. Rowan is sixteen and many of her followers seem to expect her to be perfect even though almost everyone makes mistakes. This behavior happens all the time on social media. People spread so much hate yet expect to be respected themselves.
I get very frustrated with people who behave that way. People who say that they just want to be accepted but will not accept other peoples opinions. I honestly do not care about whether someone is straight, gay, bisexual or transgender, all I care about is if they are kind. I think that people need to respect each other in order to get respect themselves. I do not agree with homophobes or racists, yet I respect their opinions as long as they respect mine. I often defend celebrities online by calling out the internet trolls. I do it in a respectful way, however. I tell them how spreading hate is no way to fix the problem and that shame is no answer. I spread positivity to contradict their negativity. I believe that the key to life is to spread positivity.

I agree that people can make a huge difference in their own lives and in the lives of others by being positive. I'm not sure it's super productive online, though, where the commenting can just go on endlessly. But spreading that message in person to other people who keep it going is an awesome task. : )
